THE OWASCO STAGE RACE HAS BEEN
CONSOLIDATED TO A SUNDAY ONLY
ROAD RACE. THIS STAGE HAS BEEN
CANCELLED. PROCEED TO STAGE THREE
TO READ ABOUT THE ROAD RACE.
Since inception, the Prison City Criterium has been
raced both clockwise and counter clockwise around the City of
Auburn's Loop Road. Our sense is that something has
always been lacking with the design-
namely, not enough cornering. So our Committee
went back to the drawing board. Then it dawned us. Why
not better use the streets contained within the Loop
Road? When you look at an aerial view of the Auburn
business district, its not readily apparent that a race
course in the shape of an
abstract figure 8 is at all feasible.
But drop down to ground level and take a spin on a bike
and you will be pleasantly surprised at what you
discover. The course we designed may just be the
ultimate course for this piece of real estate.
The angled turns that are less than 90 degrees are
not an issue. The streets are so wide that there is
plenty of room to make the turns safely. That being
said, this course makes the Prison City Criterium our
most technical crit ever.
Nevertheless, the nature of crits is that the
majority of riders manage to hang together. To offset
this, generous time bonuses will be awarded to those
riders able to stay up front. This
will be the only stage where riders have the opportunity
to earn time bonuses, but we think it will add
real meaning to the race by rewarding those riders
willing to burn the extra watts
heading into Sunday's
challenging road race.
Also, the rider who
accumulates the most time bonuses
in Stage II will be awarded the
Sprinter's Jersey. There will be
no sprint contests incorporated
into this year's road race
